Royal Gardens is a mature suburban neighbourhood located in the Petrolia subdivision of south-central Edmonton. The neighbourhood is predominantly residential, and it was developed for the most part during the 1960s with single-family structures. The neighbourhood of Royal Gardens is bounded on the north by Whitemud Drive, on the east by 111 Street, on the south by 40 Avenue, and on the west by 119 Street/121 Street.
Multi-family complexes border 40th Avenue and 119th Street; both thoroughfares have good transit connections.
Four schools are located in Royal Gardens. Harry Ainlay Composite High (public) and Louis St. Laurent Jr/Sr High (Catholic) are situated on the same site as a large recreational area, which includes Confederation Pool, and serve students from surrounding neighbourhoods. Elementary schools include Richard Secord (public) and St. Boniface (Catholic).
Commercial development within the neighbourhood is limited, but residents can easily access a variety of businesses in either Greenfield, the neighbourhood to the south, or at the nearby Southgate Centre shopping mall.
There are two large parks located within Royal Gardens; Royal Gardens Park in the southwest corner, and Whitemud Park in the northeast corner, which is home to the Confederation Leisure Centre. Confederation features a salt water pool and the adjacent fitness complex includes an indoor ice arena, outdoor tennis courts, sports fields, and a running track.
This neighbourhood may have been named after Joseph Royal (1837-1902), who was the lieutenant governor of the Northwest Territories between 1888 and 1893. Royal Gardens has been the name for this area since 1912, but the name was officially adopted in 1962.
The community is represented by the Royal Gardens Community League, established in 1968, which maintains a community hall, outdoor rink and tennis courts located at 117 Street and 40 Avenue.
